ICICLE TAKES “TROPHY OF JUSTICE” AT HOMELESS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

22-Aug-2014

The World Cup may be over but Hong Kong saw another wave of soccer fever during the Homeless World Cup Fundraising Tournament over the weekend.

Icicle mobilised a strong team of 12 players, winning all but one game during the two-day event. Donning the newly-designed “Icicle Blue” jerseys, the team played in five matches over two days, beating other corporate teams including Hong Kong Jockey Club, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Konica Minolta, and walked away with the “Trophy of Justice”, which now proudly sits at the Icicle Hong Kong headquarters.

Icicle is no stranger to the four-a-side tournament, which raises funds for the Hong Kong homeless team. The company has taken part in every tournament since its inception in 2006, making it one of the longest and most loyal supporters of the event.

Icicle’s Founding Chairman, Alex Chan, was instrumental to the founding of the homeless team in Hong Kong in 2005 and has since been the manager of the team, named “Dawn”.

“I read in the newspaper that Soco (Society for Community Organisation) was putting a Hong Kong team together for the Homeless World Cup in Edinburgh. My passion for soccer led me to make a “cold call” to Soco. One thing led to another, and here I am, still enjoying every part of it as much as when I first got involved in 2005,” said Mr Chan.

This year, the tournament successfully raised funds for eight players from Hong Kong and their coach to travel to Chile in October for the annual Homeless World Cup. The international tournament began in Austria in 2003.
